When you start on the trail it forks off to the Vista Vortex where you will see the rock formation known as Kachina Woman. I have read different things about the vortexes of Sedona and to my understanding they are places where spiritual energy can be heavily felt. I’m not so sure about that. I think different people can experience spiritual energy in different settings. I may feel the spirit in nature while someone else may see God at a monster truck rally. I don’t know about anyone else, but I can honestly say I felt truly at peace in this very special place. When we first arrived, someone was playing a flute on top of Kachina Woman while others scattered atop other rocks sat meditating. People were peaceful and content. I saw people who had just met hugging each other, sharing the common bond of the experience of this place. It was remarkable.
You must return from Vista Vortex to the main part of the trail to continue to Boynton Canyon: a gorgeous box canyon which will take you through red rocks to a lush canyon floor and up to the top again. It is a moderate hike until you get to the last half hour, then I would call it strenuous. You climb up large boulder like steps to get to the end of the trail where you come to a landing with a view of the canyon wall behind you.
